3 Things to Do in Frederick Maryland Over the Weekend

Long weekends are often the vacation days we don’t look forward to, too short to enjoy and too long to stay home. That said, you and your family can still enjoy long weekends, especially if you live in or near Washington DC. You may want to take a trip around Maryland and enjoy your weekend there.

#1 – Take a trip down memory lane

Touring the Monacay National Battlefield will give you an insight into the rich and colorful history of the United States. One of the last battles of the Confederates took place in this area. You may also want to visit the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Park and see the 40-foot-tall bronze monument commemorating Ground Zero, as well as the War Correspondents Memorial Arch that was built to commemorate the heroes of war who lost their lives during the war.

Apart from these historical sites, you can also visit some of the museums in the area, such as the Brunswick Heritage or Frederick County Museum of History, as well as the German Architectural Museum in Schifferstadt. Guided tours or self-guided tours are available to make it easy for you to visit the sites at your own pace or free time.

#2 – Cultural Appreciation – Antiques and Wineries

Visiting Maryland is never complete without stopping at local wineries and heading downtown for some antique shopping. The Frederick Wine Trail will take you to three local wineries in Frederick: Linganore, Elk Run, and Loew, which are located in the foothills of the Catochin Mountains. You can book a bed & breakfast, hotel or cabins near the area to better appreciate your wine tasting sessions.

Downtown Frederick is just as exciting as visiting the wineries, as you can sample some locally brewed beers as well as fresh foods unique to the area. Visit Brewer’s Alley, North Market Pop Shop and Zoe’s Chocolate Co. for delicious food and take some home to enjoy later. A food tour is also available if you want to try all the places in one day.

#3 – Not for the faint of heart!

If you want something to remember your trip and make it memorable, consider joining a ghost tour or cemetery tour while you’re in Frederick. The ghost tour is a night tour that will take you to some of the haunted places in the area. The cemetery tour, on the other hand, will take you to some of the popular grave mazes and crypts in the cemetery that are also home to several well-known figures who helped shape American history. You can join the guided tour or opt to do a self-guided tour, but for this one, I’d suggest taking a guided tour if things don’t work out as expected.
