Best Getaways in South Africa: Surfing in Jeffrey Bay

Jeffrey’s Bay is a series of breaks and swells in the Eastern Cape of South Africa divided into Kitchen Windows, Magna tube, Boneyards, Supertubes, Impossibles, Tubes, the Point, and Albatross.

Jeffrey’s Bay was initially established in the mid-1800s by the principal partners of Jeffrey & Glendinnings who opened a small store in the sheltered bay of the Eastern Cape. The store attracted more people who also settled in the area, and “Jeffrey” Bay moved from the unspoiled coastline to a small fishing village populated by rural areas.

Kitchen Windows

At the entrance to Jeffrey’s Bay is Kitchen Windows. The “Windows” are consistent and good for surfers of all skill levels, unlike the Supertubes and Boneyards further down the coast where situations are crowded and breaks are extremely challenging.

The boneyards

The Boneyards are a break nestled between the Supertubes and Magna Tubes in Jeffrey’s Bay. Fast, hard forehand and big waves make Boneyards one of the best spots on the J-Bay shoreline, if you can get in on the locals.

Albatross

Albatross is another quick break to the right located on the protected shoreline of Jeffrey’s Bay. Less crowded than other places, Albatros offers some of the best waves in the world, although not as well known as the nearby Supertubes.

Magna tubes

When the surf scene first came to Jeffrey’s Bay, surfers flocked to the superubos. As this location became more crowded, other ruptures were discovered in the area, including the Magna tubes. Rumor has it that the name of the break is due to some Australian pilgrims hitting the wave. When asked what it was like, they replied, “Ahh, there are magnificent tubes, friend,” so the Magnatubes were born.

The Magna Tubes are right at the end of the Supertubes Bay and Boneyard breaks. Challenging counterattacks are seconds from the city of Jeffrey’s Bay, one of the fastest growing urban areas in all of South Africa and one of the best surfing destinations in the world.

The Supertubos

Supertubes are a section of the wave at Jeffrey’s Bay ranked among the best surf spots in the world. The incredible 300m jumps make it the perfect place for surfing tournaments, namely the Billabong Pro ASP Tournament held every July. In 2009, 45 of the best surfers in the world came to J-Bay for a chance to show off on the big wave.
