Credit Report Cleaning: The Incredibly Simple Process

Picture this, you walk into a new car dealership. It can be of any brand, whatever your favorite. You see a new sports car making loving eyes at you. You hear him begging you to take him for a test drive. You walk around the vehicle looking it up and down like you’re at a singles bar looking at your next ex “roommate.” You look through the windows to see the sinful comfort and you imagine how good you can make it look. Then a charismatic salesman approaches him and tells him how great he can make him look. His work is done. You’re hooked and you want this ride waiting for you every morning.

Then the salesman, already feeling the weight of the wad of cash he’s about to pocket, walks you into his office and places a book of paperwork in front of you. You fill it all up, salivating at the prospect of riding in your new car. So BAM! “Sorry, your credit application has been denied. You will need a co-signer.” Surely many of you imagine this, because, well, because you have lived it. You have experienced the embarrassment of being denied credit because of a dirty credit report. Well, let’s see if we can give a happy ending to that little scenario. As you read every word of this article, I want you to remember the feeling you had when you were turned down for credit. Because after reading this article, that’s the only way you’ll ever feel it again. I am going to establish the process of cleaning the credit report.

  1. Get a copy of your credit report. Yeah I know, this seems a bit obvious. But some of us are not as fortunate above as others and it is necessary to mention it. If you’ve been lucky enough to experience the joy of being turned down for credit, you’ll receive a letter in the mail telling you why and how you can get a free copy of your credit report. Otherwise, contact the credit reporting agencies and ask for one. You can do this once a year for free.
  2. Make sure there are no evil lies in your report. Yes, it’s sad to say, but it happens. You may have incorrect data on your credit report that unfairly lowers your credit score and keeps you out of the driver’s seat of that new ride. So go through your credit report with a fine-toothed comb and dispute any inaccuracies. At this point in your “credit” life, you should expect incorrect data to appear on your credit report. You can use this to your advantage. Not only can you remove false information, but you can also remove any mention of your delinquent account from your credit report. You just have to know the right way to do it. Keep reading.
  3. For God’s sake, pay your bills! Write down all past due and outstanding balances. Write the phone number, account number, and company name under each balance. Prioritize this list. That is, determine in what order you are going to pay them. Many times you can negotiate with the creditor and pay the balance in full for pennies on the dollar. I paid a balance of $1200 with $250. It can and is being done. Make a plan to pay them and stick to it. You may have to pay for them one at a time. The goal is to pay off the debt. Just don’t say the wrong thing, like you’re borrowing the money. They need to know that you have no money.
  4. Remove the dirt from your clean credit report. As you pay off the debts, contact the creditor and ask them to remove the negative entries from your report. They should be willing to do this once they get your money. If he says no, ask again. Each negative entry removed will increase your credit score a little more.
  5. Get into debt again. Once your credit report is clean, you can begin the rebuilding process. Get more credit and use it. Just be smart about it. Remember, baby steps, my friend.

Now, imagine that little scenario that I described at the beginning of this article. Except this time, after running his credit, the salesperson comes back into the room and flashes him a big smile. Then he throws you the keys to that sexy ride that’s being detailed for you right now. Much better photo, right?
