Crossbow maintenance tips

A crossbow can be a very accurate and fun weapon to shoot. However, if not properly maintained, it can quickly lose its accuracy and even become dangerous to the shooter if a critical part fails. To avoid any problems, there are several simple maintenance tasks that need to be done regularly.

The first task is to keep the cords and cables lubricated and waxed. The central service section of the rope should be treated with rail lubricant every few shots and the crossbow flight rail should also be cleaned with the same lubricant. The rest of the string and cables (skip this step for steel cables) should be treated with bow wax by placing it on the string and rubbing it vigorously with your fingers to heat and melt the wax into the fibers of the string. Ropes and cables are expected to wear out and need to be replaced as soon as they show signs of fraying. By waxing and lubricating frequently, you will extend your life to several times that of those that have not been treated.

The second task is to clean and lubricate the firing mechanism of your crossbow. Dust and debris have a way of collecting on trigger assemblies, causing them to fail or become difficult to pull. Remove debris from the trigger with a can of compressed air, firearm cleaners, or both. Next, a few drops of gun oil should be sprayed on the cleaning mechanism.

The last task is to visually inspect the limbs, shafts and cams (if it is a compound crossbow). Branches should be inspected for cracks or chips along the front and back edges and sides. If any are found, the crossbow should not be fired until it has been returned to the dealer for warranty repair. Shafts should be examined for worn, cracked, or missing bushings. Most leaf spring bushings wear out over time and this manifests as excessive cam camber. If the cams seem to lean or you can see a cracked or missing bushing, return the leaf spring to the dealer for further inspection and repair.

Crossbow archery is a very fun and safe sport when done correctly. By taking these simple steps before each filming session, you will keep it that way.
