Today, candle making has become a hobby for many people. Its uses have spread to other purposes: to relax and calm the mind, to help create a romantic atmosphere in a room, for meditation and many more. More and more people are interested in making candles from home. So for all you DIY craftsmen and those who want to learn the art of candle making, here is a list of the basic equipment you need.
wax
There are so many types of wax to choose from: gel, beeswax, paraffin and much more.
scales
A scale is needed to weigh the wax and other ingredients to get the correct amount.
Molds or Containers
The type of mold you use will depend on the type of candle you want to create. Metal cans are recommended for beginners. Fancy molds are sold at local craft stores.
Wick
The type and size of wick you choose is a vital factor in candle making if you want to create one that will burn properly. You can buy wicks with tabs or pre-primed.
color
To color the candles, you can choose between liquid dye, dye blocks or dye chips.
thermometer
The wax should melt at 190ยบ F. The thermometer will be used to measure the wax you are melting to ensure you get the correct temperature. You can use a candy thermometer for this.
stove
This will be used to melt wax. A hot plate can also be used as an alternative.
Saucepans or Jug
This will be to melt the wax. Many people use the bain-marie method to make candles. To do this, simply fill a large saucepan half full with water, then heat it on a stove. Fill a smaller saucepan with wax and place it inside the hot large skillet.
releasing agent
Spray the agent on the mold before adding the wax. The candles will be easier to unmold if you use release agents, such as vegetable oil.
mold sealer
This will effectively seal the wick hole and prevent wax from escaping.
Other Supplies
This would include old newspapers (to cover your work surface), latex gloves (for hand protection), isopropyl alcohol (to clean the pan before it cools completely), and paper towels.
