Many of us have noticed the dramatic increase in the number of gardens that now have trampolines. What are the factors that have contributed to the rise in popularity of trampolines? In this article we take a closer look at what’s going on.

Driving through suburban streets here in England it’s impossible not to notice the new trends emerging. Once a family garden includes a new purchase, it seems the neighbors simply have to do their best to catch up. This applies to many things. For a while it seemed fashionable for every garden to have a small football goal. This would allow children to dream that one day they could score the winning goal in the Wembley cup final, or perhaps be like David Beckham.

The soccer goals can still be seen, but are now often accompanied by a variety of larger equipment. These include climbing frames, playhouses, and trampolines. Trampolines are of course the most popular of all. Why is this the case?

One of the reasons is that they are a lot of fun for children. Obviously, this is vitally important: we want garden games that our children enjoy and that keep them busy. Trampolines do just this. They can also be used safely, thanks in no small part to the fact that it is now possible to buy complete sets including safety enclosures and ladders for younger children. So what are we to make of the rise of the humble springboard?

Surely it must be something good. Any equipment that encourages children to spend time outdoors engaging in active play should be a positive idea. It certainly seems healthier than time spent watching TV or playing the latest console games. It looks like the trampolines will stay and that may not be a bad thing.
