How Brewer’s Yeast and MSM Eliminate Constipation

Brewer’s yeast can help relieve, reduce, or eliminate constipation. If you can stand the taste, add it to your juices in the morning and at night.

Brewer’s yeast contains all the B vitamins except B12. It also contains many vitamins, minerals, and is rich in amino acids.

When you first use brewer’s yeast, it will create gas in your colon. Brewer’s yeast supplements the good bacteria in your colon, increasing your count. This increase in good bacteria triggers a battle between good and bad bacteria that create gas as a by-product. Keep using brewer’s yeast until the gas stops. This takes a few weeks, but you’re doing one of the best things you can do for your health – increasing good bacteria and reducing bad bacteria.

You can enhance the benefit of using brewer’s yeast by eating cultured yogurt or supplementing good bacteria capsules between meals. You want to do this between meals so that when you take your supplement, your stomach doesn’t make a lot of HCl acid, which would kill the good bacteria.

If you have gout or are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors, do not drink brewer’s yeast.

MSM

MSM stands for methyl sulfonyl methane. MSM is organic sulfur. It has many benefits in the body and is widely used as an anti-inflammatory and is especially useful for arthritis pain. MSM is used in all cells and tissues in the body, including joint tissue.

MSM is especially good for relieving constipation.

MSM in the colon stops or blocks cholinesterase activity (ko-li-nes-ter-ace).

What is cholinesterase?

Our nervous system is made up of a network of nerve cells, which begin in the brain and end in all parts of our body. It is the nerves that direct the contraction or expansion of the muscles for bowel movements. Once the muscle completes its movement, a cholinesterase enzyme is released that prevents the muscle from moving again. Without the nerve signal that blocks cholinesterase, the muscle would continue to move without stopping.

MSM is helpful in relieving constipation. It allows more colon contractions to occur, helping you to eliminate constipation. When I have used MSM, up to 6000-8000mg each day, I have experienced up to 3-4 bowel movements each day. Since MSM blocks cholinesterase activity, it allows greater peristaltic action to occur in the colon.

Using 2000-4000 mg of MSM, you can maintain your bowel movements 2-3 times a day. Of course, for each person the amount will be different.

MSM’s action on the colon is helpful for older people who have fewer nerve signals for peristalsis. Cholinesterase stops the few signs of peristalsis that older people have, thus creating constipation.

In SW Jacob, MD, RM Lawrence MD, Ph.D, and M. Zucker’s book, The Miracle of MSM, 1999, they say:

“As a dietary supplement, MSM offers great potential for anyone with constipation. MSM produces a general ‘tonic’ effect in the intestines and normalizes bowel function, especially in the elderly. We have administered MSM to nursing homes, where constipation is a common problem. Nurses have said that MSM works well for patients, even for people who do not respond to Metamucil or stool softeners. “

The effects of MSM during pregnancy have not been evaluated, so it is best not to use it during this time.
