How to find a missing cat or dog

My wife and I have a German Shepherd, a Siberian Husky, and two cats. The German shepherd was welcomed by us from the shelter the day before the execution. We love animals and help as much as we can. We have raised several dogs in the past and found great homes for them. For us, the problem with raising dogs is that sometimes they get attached (and so do we), and then it’s difficult to pass them on to the new owner. This is how the German shepherd stayed in our lives.

When we find stray dogs, we take them. We call on local shelters and the local humanitarian society. We also called the police department and reported that we found a dog. Depending on your police department, they may not like it, but some police departments will take note of it. Then we will put up some signs in the neighborhood and wait. We usually wait about 10 days to see if the owner contacts us. If we don’t get a call, we’ll take the dog to a vet for a checkup and then start looking for a new home for the dog. Craigslist is usually a great place to start finding a new owner.

Recently my wife found a cute chihuahua walking in the middle of the street at night. He was able to pick it up and brought it home. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a collar, but judging from his health and demeanor, he was an indoor dog. So we called the shelters and the humane society and put up some signs around the neighborhood. Two days had passed and there were no phone calls. We decided to go and buy her a suitable collar and leash for the time she is with us. My wife took him to Petco to try on some necklaces. Somehow he got loose on Petco and ran out the door. My wife couldn’t catch it, so she called me.

I immediately called the police, just in case someone else called to report the dog. I left you my number and a description. I called 3 local shelters and left my number and description with all of them. I called about 6 local veterinarians and animal hospitals and left my number and description. I called humane society and animal control and left my number and description of the dog. All of this was done within 15 minutes of my wife calling me. Then my wife and I spent the next 6 hours driving and looking for the dog. We questioned all the people we think might have a lead (homeless, outside workers, etc.). Every 1-2 hours I would call all of the locations mentioned above to see if anything was happening.

The next day, we surveyed the area again and called each contact mentioned 3 times. We also visited all the local shelters and posted on penny savers, craigslist, and posted signs around the neighborhood. We keep calling everywhere for about a week. And for about 30 days after we lost the dog, we visit all of our local shelters and humane society at least once every 3 days. On the 33rd the Chihuahua appeared at the humanitarian society and we were able to get it out. We spent time with him and then we found him a new permanent owner. I have often helped friends and neighbors with similar circumstances with much faster success.

The reason I am writing this article is because a few months ago I was walking my dog and saw a man in his twenties hanging up brochures about his missing golden retriever. So I spoke to him and he told me that the dog was lost about 2 weeks ago. He seemed to really care about the dog, but he just didn’t know what to do. When I asked him if he called or visited the shelters or the humane society … he said “no”. He did not think of visiting them. Actually ??? So I decided to write an article …
