How to Stretch Your Vacation Dollar in Savannah, Georgia’s Historic District

If you’re looking for a memorable vacation that won’t break the bank, consider booking a trip to the Savannah Georgia Historic District. There are many emblematic places of the Civil and Revolutionary War, unique buildings and activities of visit to the place, within a 100% walkable area. But best of all, your stay doesn’t have to be expensive. You can stretch your vacation dollar quite a bit by following these tips.

1) Stay in a vacation rental in the historic center: Due to the fall in the real estate market, many families who could not sell their houses have turned them into vacation rentals to pay their notes. Therefore, there are many comfortable and well-located vacation rentals available in the Historic District.

These vacation rentals range from studio apartments to houses that can accommodate 10 or more people. They are very profitable for couples traveling with other couples or families of three or more. In fact, vacation rentals can reduce your lodging expenses significantly, compared to a hotel. Most also have a fully equipped kitchen, so you can prepare a meal or two a day.

2) Avoid touristy restaurants, mainly on River Street. There are many wonderful places to eat throughout the historic district. Many locals, in fact, go to Bay or Broughton streets, where they can find good food at reasonable prices.

3) Schedule your vacation anytime other than St. Patrick’s Day. While the St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a must-see, it’s not something you should do on a budget. Try to visit Savannah in the off-season (usually January through March 1 and the summer months). It’s just as pretty, although the weather can be a bit unpredictable.

4) Enjoy a picnic at Forsyth Park or one of the Squares. A great place to buy sandwiches or have lunch is Parker’s on Drayton Street. The food is excellent, the prices are reasonable and you can order everything to go.

5) If possible, ask someone who grew up in Savannah for advice. The locals have the scoop.

6) Buy a free Connect Savannah at many places in the city. You’ll find many free or low-cost concerts, events, and activities that are often only attended by locals.

7) Visit the Savannah Convention and Visitors Bureau on Martin Luther King Blvd. There you will find many free brochures, maps, and tips from representatives on the cheapest ways to enjoy the sites.

8) Walking the side streets provides its own narrative. Take a look at the architecture, the wrought iron work on the houses and the plaques and you will have your own charming walking tour.
