I Grew Up On A Farm – Molly’s Reviews

The revision

I Grew Up on a Farm is an autobiographical account of the author’s life on a working farm in Middletown, New York, during the 1950s. Written by author Alan Lewis and illustrated by artist Bob Fletcher I Grew Up on a Farm da Vida to the author’s memories of a time shared by this critic and sadly lost to many today. I Grew Up on a Farm offers the reader a fascinating glimpse into farm life as experienced by much of the United States for a good part of the last century. And it offers a moment of reminiscence for those who enjoy remembering their own childhood in the way that writer Lewis has captured.

Written in a richly illustrated, child-friendly text, I Grew Up on a Farm takes the reader step-by-step with the writer as she collects eggs, plays with her dog, and gathers produce from the family garden to sell at a roadside stall. The reader is offered a glimpse of the work and fun found on a family farm. We watch fishing in the pond, taking care of household chores, and spending the long summer days with family and friends.

I particularly liked the artwork found in the work. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs enlarged by illustrator Fletcher to full-color drawings, each page is a delight. I Grew Up on a Farm is a warm-hearted tale of a rapidly fading era in our country. Urban sprawl increasingly extending into areas where family farms once flourished

I brought Grew Up on a Farm back to my fourth grade classroom, where it became an instant hit. We live in a rural part of Oklahoma, however only one of the students lives ‘in the country’. The children were delighted to hear the story and have since taken turns reading the book. We voted for the artwork and our consensus is ‘the artwork is great!’

I grew up on a farm is a reading book for the younger age group 3-8. It is a slightly supported reading for 8th and 9th graders and a solo reading for most intermediate grades. The book provides an excellent opportunity for children to discuss life today compared to life a few years ago, and to speculate on how life may change in the future.

I enjoy the book as much as my class, happy to recommend it.

I Grew Up On A Farm is a great choice for the home pleasure library, classroom book shelf, school library bookshelves, and homeschool reading list.
