Impaction in iguanas occurs when the intestine becomes blocked with indigestible material. It is a very serious condition. Your lizard will die if not treated promptly. So what exactly causes it?

Cause

Iguanas are affected when you eat something that your system cannot digest. Sometimes, they do this accidentally while clicking their tongues to gather information about their surroundings. This is the reason why certain substrates can be dangerous for iggies. Leaving small items lying around can also be dangerous.

Symptoms

An impacted iguana usually shows signs much like ones that are constipated. You will notice that you stop having regular bowel movements. When it does, it will strive to do so. Any droppings that pass will be small and narrow.

Diagnosis

If you suspect your iguana is impacted, you should take it to a vet immediately. He will probably take an x-ray to determine if this is really the case. Sometimes your vet can tell if your iguana is affected just by performing a physical exam.

Treatment

The only treatment method for impaction is surgery. All surgery has risks due to the use of anesthesia in reptiles. However, as stated above, your iguana will die if this condition is not treated as soon as possible.

Prevention

It is vital that you keep a close eye on your lizard whenever he is out for exercise. Curiosity can get the best of him and he may try to eat any small object he finds. Also, you should never use fine or particulate substrates for iguanas. If you use rugs, make sure there are no loose threads.
