The Lowrance family of high-definition marine GPS devices

Any of Lowrance’s high-definition marine GPS systems will not disappoint those with experience with older marine GPS models. Its more expensive models pack a huge set of features into a very friendly interface.

Many cars are finally being equipped with reliable GPS devices made by some of the most recognizable manufacturers in the industry. These devices truly offer proof that accidents can be prevented and drivers can get to their destinations faster while saving money by using less fuel. Boats are also getting the Lowrance treatment by capitalizing on creating the best Lowrance marine GPS devices available.

History

Lowrance got off to a great start when it launched its full-size GPS chartplotter devices under the name GlobalMap. These devices had beautiful, high-resolution displays that can also function as radar, and have powerful connectivity features that allow them to connect with other Lowrance devices to share sonar and other network data.

All of these devices have been superseded by the newer Mark & Elite series which boasts better one-handed control, higher position accuracy, and a simpler navigation interface. A number of high definition devices were also introduced which are now prominent in marine GPS technology.

available models

All of Lowrance’s high-definition marine GPS models are quite expensive, with the HDS-5m being the most compact and affordable at nearly $600. There are 3 other variations of this device with 5, 7, 8, and 10-inch screens respectively.

Any model that has an “m” at the end means that they are multifunction devices that have the functions of a fish finder and a chartplotter. Lowrance marine GPS’s that don’t have an “m” are actually a bit more expensive and each model has a built-in broadband sonar, giving you sonar capabilities. All other features are similar to those offered by multifunction devices.

A special unit that shares the same price as the HDS-5m is the HDS-5x, which is described as a multi-function echosounder that lacks other features. There are no larger versions of this model.

common features

All models sport a nice sharp screen that allows people to see the shallows in much more detail. Deep water performance is noticeably better and more targets can be seen without the noise, making them great for broadband fish finding.

Graphics features have also been improved with better map detail, thanks to the higher screen resolution and NEW Insight USA technology that uses contour shading. Thousands of lakes in the US have enhanced quality, displaying shorelines and contours in amazing detail. Compatibility is still maintained as it can be used with all Navionics chart cards.

Some of the nice extras include a built-in LWX-1 radio smart antenna that provides useful radio services that can help check the weather. The device can even be connected to regular sound systems via a 3.5mm jack to listen to other entertainment services delivered over the radio, such as sports. The Sirius Mariner and Voyager weather service package offers easier weather monitoring complete with tropical storm forecasts and warnings.
