History

It is well known that Can Picafort is directly related to its urban development in the last 30 years, but it is also true that Can Picafort is a place full of history.

Located in the vicinity of Bronze Age sites, the first known significant settlement in the area dates back to the 7th century BC, as shown by archaeological remains in S’illot d’es Porros or the Phoenician cemetery.

Conservation tasks have discovered important finds in both necropolises and access to visitors has been allowed. Today, Son Bauló is one of the most valued beaches in Mallorca and is located within the Son Real Protected Natural Area of ​​Special Interest.

The most recent history of Can Picafort is only a century old. At that time, Can Picafort was a small fishing village that survived thanks to agriculture and fishing. At that time having farmland provided wealth, in fact by that time vast amounts of coastal land was for sale. The Mallorcans who bought those lands now have a great fortune. And around the beginning of the century some rich families from Santa Margalida moved to Can Picafort. One of these families bought the land from Jeroni Fuster, alias Picafort, one of those fishermen’s houses, and the former owner gave the name to the town, Can Picafort.

Until the 70s, Can Picafort had 200 citizens. These first families laid the foundations for the development of Can Picafort, and now it has become one of the most interesting tourist spots on the island, mainly for Germans and English, but you can also find tourists from all over the world.

Walking in Can Picafort

Walking through Can Picafort you will find red and white towels that immediately catch your eye. These constructions are evenly distributed along the entire coastline. These panels were built from the 1940s to the 1970s and were military constructions used by the navy for underwater shooting in the Bay of Alcudia.

A sign of the town’s respect for its history is that one of those towels is now right in the center of town right in the middle of a street and cars have to go around it to get around.

In addition, the growth of tourism in Can Picafort translated into an increasingly better tourist offer at all levels: gastronomy, commerce, nautical activities, beach clubs in Ses Casetes des Capellans.

However, it is worth visiting its beaches and all the activities on the beaches. One of the best is the Son Bauló beach, located between Can Picafort and Son Serra de Marina where there is no one on the beach in August. But if you prefer crowded beaches, your best choice is Playa de Muro, just north of Can Picafort.

Near Can Picafort is Son Serra de Marina, this town has not grown like Can Picafort, but its population grows in the summer because the Mallorcans have made their second residence there. Son Serra de Marina has 3 beaches and has become a place of pilgrimage for surfers.

Decades ago, the beaches of Can Picafort were totally virgin, full of bushes. In recent years, the council has enabled the area to give better access to tourists and show a more peaceful and comfortable side of the beaches.

One of the growing demands of tourists is to rent a boat in Can Picafort. The bay of Alcudia, and especially Can Picafort, offers all the possibilities that sea lovers are looking for: beautiful landscapes, sea, pretty towns and, most importantly, crystal clear waters.

As proof of this, the Can Picafort yacht club has increased the number of moorings from 80 to 450 in recent years.

The middle-aged tourist with medium/high purchasing power has increased the number of rented boats in the bay of Alcudia. Some of the experienced sailors like to rent licensed boats to enjoy the bay of Alcudia by sea as a family.

However, the offer that young tourists like the most is boat rental without a license, which gives them freedom and incredible experiences without the need for a boat license.

Sailing through the bay of Alcudia is something that tourists should experience at least once in their lives.
