Breed Description

The Lhasa Apso originated in Tibet. This non-sporting breed was the inner sentinel of Buddhist monasteries, with the role of alarming the monks of intruders. The male Lhasa Apso is typically 10.75 inches tall at the withers, weighing around 14 to 18 pounds, while the female counterpart is slightly smaller at 12 to 14 pounds.

Coat

The heavy double-coated Lhasa Apso has a long coat that serves as insulation. Their coats keep them warm during the winter season and cool during the summer. His fur grows even towards the ground, covering his eyes, but they are protected by his long eyelashes. Their fur is neither silky nor smooth in texture, with colors including smoke, parti, slate, and gold.

Exercise

The Lhasa Apso requires a moderate amount of exercise. You have to take them out for a walk daily, but the game will be enough to exercise them. As with all other breeds, playing will not be enough for their primal instinct to walk. Dogs that are not walked daily often develop behavior problems. They also enjoy having a good romp in a securely fenced off-leash area.

Temper

Lhasa Apses are placid, affectionate and loyal. They love to be close to their owners, usually trying to sit next to them when they are around. It is a playful breed, usually getting along with children and adults as well. However, they may try to dominate other animals, which can result in a feisty dog. This friendly and intelligent breed can tend to be stubborn in obedience.

Originally from Tibet, the Lhasa Apso was bred by noble and holy men. They were mainly considered sacred, previously thought to bring good luck. Because of this, they were commonly used as guard dogs in monasteries from long ago.

Watch out

The Lhasa Apso does not require stripping or trimming. But by the time they have a full coat, they will need to be brushed at least once a day to prevent them from mating. Dry shampoo should be done when necessary. It is important to regularly check your feet for mats and foreign matter. Their eyes and ears must be meticulously clean as they are prone to tearing. Some people want their fur clipped to minimize grooming needs.

Training

As with all other breeds, the Lhasa Apso will do best with gentle yet firm and consistent training methods. When training this breed, it is crucial that a relationship based on mutual respect is first established. Due to the fact that this breed is stubborn and independent, they would need a confident trainer who can take charge.
