First of all, as soon as the dog arrives, it needs time to get acquainted with its new home. He will explore the family members and the environment in which he will live from now on.

In general, one or two days are required for this adaptation. He will quickly choose the places where he feels comfortable. However, he should not be allowed to do anything he pleases on the pretext that he is young, or if he is older, that he needs to find his bearings. In fact, the dog quickly learns the difference between what is allowed and what is not allowed.

For example, if at first it was allowed to lie on the sofa or in bed, it will be difficult, practically impossible, to accommodate it when the little ball of hair turns into a huge dog of sixty kilos. Do not think that it is different with a small Yorkshire or a Dachshund. They may be small, but they cause considerable damage in a short period of time,

That is why it is important to show the dog who owns the house by forbidding him to jump on the beds and giving him his own toys. He must also choose a place where he will eat and prohibit him from ordering food.

Also, it must eat after its owners, as it happens in the pack when the leader eats first. He should also have his own place to sleep: a rug or a box that is located away from doors and windows so that he doesn’t have the impression that he is controlling the comings and goings of the house.

These few simple rules will put the dog back in its rightful place as a pack animal. He must understand that he is subservient and that you are dominant. It is stability within the hierarchy that allows the dog to find balance.

The rule is valid for all dogs, regardless of their size. Prevent a Dachshund from becoming the tyrant of the house and baring its teeth every time someone approaches your sofa or bites the calves of passing visitors.

The important thing is to always maintain a consistent behavior. Do not allow the dog to do something on a day that is normally prohibited. You must be firm, without being excessive. This is how the relationship of trust established between the dog and its owner is preserved over time.
