The Saints’ Super Bowl victory

On February 7, 2010, the mighty New Orleans Saints won Super Bowl 44, which was the first such victory in franchise history. Many sports analysts wrote them off, saying they didn’t stand a chance against Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. They were the underdogs and there was no way they could win the Super Bowl. They were wrong.

The Saints took the field believing they could beat the Colts. The game got off to a slow start, but quickly changed gears in the second quarter. Completing passes anywhere he wanted, Saints starting quarterback Drew Brees took charge of the game. There was nothing the Colts could do. The Saints scored points every time they had the ball.

Closing the third quarter with control of the game it was obvious that the Saints were going to win. The Saints were in complete control of the game on both offense and defense. The Saints were on their way to making history. This was his destiny.

With just three minutes left in regulation, cornerback Tony Porter intercepted a pass from Peyton Manning and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown. This was the last score the Saints needed to secure victory in the Super Bowl, earning them their place in the NFL history books. Manning and the Colts got the ball back with one more scoring opportunity, but were left empty-handed when time ran out.

What a game for the Saints, who used to be called the Aint by their own fans because they were such a poor team. Curious how things change. Once the laughingstock of the NFL, the Saints are now world champions and very much in service of that title. Bringing the Lombardi Trophy back to New Orleans was something Brees only dreamed of. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, this was a way to let the people of the city know that dreams do come true, no matter how bad things seem.
